First, why are cutting skills important?

Cutting skills help to work on:

  • coordination of the muscles in the hands
  • strengthening the muscles in the hands
  • eye-hand coordination
  • bilateral hand skills (both hands working together)
  • separation of the two sides of the hand

These skills also help with pencil control, fasteners (buttons and zippers), using silverware, establishing a dominant hand, and MORE! If you want to read more about the importance of scissor skills, click HERE!

Next, what is included in the Make a Face Scarecrow Cutting Activity?

In this packet, you will find 2 pages. The first page has 3 sets of eyes, 3 noses, and 3 mouths. There are a variety of shapes to meet a variety of cutting skills! Have your child cut out the eyes, nose, and mouth they want. Then, they can glue them on the Scarecrow face on page 2! So many fun combinations! Will you have a silly or happy Scarecrow? What shape are you cutting? Do the eyes go above or below the nose? Targeting emotions, shapes, body awareness, and prepositions are an added bonus to this fun cutting activity! For older kiddos, have them write about their Scarecrow after they made it! What’s their name? Why are they feeling silly or happy?

Here’s a quick tip…..have the child glue the mouth on first. The easier-to-cut mouths are larger and the nose may need to be glued on top of the mouth.
